issue 1: CARNIVAL

every heart a carnival

LINDZ MCLEOD
When she says yes,
I level my crossbow
and sight along the shadow
of my right arm; fire
directly into the pyramid.
Topple down stacked cups
and colourful blocks. I succeed,
winning today's wishes from the shelf.

Everything feels identical on this night;
the candyfloss, the stuffing inside
this bear, the smoke-tang on our
fresh-oiled lips.
Young love noticed by several
orange fish as we glide by,
arm-in-arm, thumping
to the reckless beat of neon gravity.

Lindz McLeod's short stories have been published by the Scotsman newspaper, the Scottish Book Trust, the Dundee Victoria & Albert Museum, and more. Her poetry has been published by Allegory Ridge, Impossible Archetype, and more. Lindz is the competition secretary of the Edinburgh Writer’s Club and holds a Masters in Creative Writing. Her writing can be found at lindzmcleod.co.uk.
