submission guidelines:

we here at perhappened mag strive to publish your truth, whatever it looks like. tell us your story how only you know best. while we accept work from all, we especially seek pieces from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or otherwise marginalized contributors.

please submit only one (1) piece per email that fits our theme as closely or loosely as you'd like. there are no word limits!

dos: risk-taking, genre-blending, picture-painting, navel-gazing works are always appreciated. we find beauty in the odd and oft-overlooked. we want your lived experiences, your can't-believe-that-happeneds, your moments of self-reflection.

donts: racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, ableism, audism, and all other -isms and -phobias will result in your email being deleted and your address blocked. we will not entertain any iteration of discrimination. implied sexual content is acceptable, but please do not send us graphic or gratuitous depictions of sex, genitalia, or sexual assault.

*using your best judgment, should your piece include graphic and/or distressing themes (e.g. sexual assault, self-harm, suicide, etc.), we ask that you include a content/trigger warning either in the body of your email or the document itself.

*we do consider previously published work, including work published in other online/print publications or social media!

n.b.: we reserve the right to remove work from any contributor that has perpetuated harm (online or off) by conducting themselves in an abusive, prejudiced, or harassing manner to others, privately or publicly. this decision falls to our staff.

particulars:

send all submissions to [email protected] as one of the following file formats: .pdf, .doc(x), or .rtf. in the body of your email, please include a short (25-50 word) third-person bio that will appear alongside your piece in perhappened mag. if you have social media and/or a website, please include your relevant handles and/or urls so we can tag you in our posts!

we're not picky about formatting, but we appreciate 12-pt, standard serif fonts (e.g. times new roman, garamond, etc.). double spacing is great, but if your piece is formatted otherwise, send us a .pdf copy as well so it is published correctly!

response time:

please allow up to two weeks for a response. if you haven't received word back from us by then, you may send us a query. our average deliberation period is about 10-12 days, but this has been known to fluctuate between one day and two weeks.

we welcome simultaneous submissions, but we ask that if your piece is accepted elsewhere, please notify us immediately via an email withdrawal (also to [email protected], preferably in the same thread). we will toast to your success!

if you receive a rejection, you may resubmit right away. (please do not submit an edited version of the same piece unless specifically asked.) if you receive an acceptance, congratulations! we're thrilled to be a home for your gorgeous work, but please refrain from submitting again for one full cycle (i.e. if you are accepted for june, you may submit again for august).

rights, reprints, and payment:

your work always belongs to you first. that being said, please do not publish any piece we have accepted before it appears in perhappened mag. once it is published, all rights revert back to the author. we kindly ask that if it is published elsewhere in the future, you credit perhappened mag as its initial publication. that includes your beautiful chapbooks and anthologies!

we are currently able to pay $10 upon publication, and we will promote your work in the issue and individually across our social media! we nominate for the pushcart prize, best of the net, best small fictions, and best microfiction anthologies.
