issue 1: CARNIVAL

concrete poem in the shape
of half a sno cone

MICHAELA MAYER
the thrill of slipping away
from parents into the throng
of unknowns, the grass crunching
under your sneakered feet, the lights
garish & bright over faded paint
& suddenly you are ten again,
sweets-saturated & heavy
with sudden knowledge
of what it means
to be free,
the tickets
clutched
in your
sticky
fist.

Michaela Mayer is a 24-year-old writer from Virginia. She holds a B.A. in English from the College of William & Mary, and has been previously published in Winged Nation and Burning House Press. She has an upcoming poem in the June issue of Mineral Lit Mag.
