issue 1: CARNIVAL

(no) thanks for the ride!

LAURA OWENS
Treacly Goodness! a tempting toffee apple
you eye me up, lure me towards your
hardened exterior / how swiftly I penetrate
your disguise, discover the sweetest core

through smudges / this rose tinted glass
each night video chats, real life is a Bloody
Spectacle! this vibrant hue / those two days
after nineteen glued to mirror’s untruth

years (two already?) a blur of sugar and
glee / short bursts of pure revelry
we made our lives fit / a thousand piece puzzle
pleasing onlookers, craving “Encore!”

supple acrobats in the sky / we made a living
danced circles round the truth until
a falter / your mask came loose- fell from
the heavens, shattered in two

too many cracks / rose tint removed to
the sickening stench of fried goodies- bedside
lamps wholeheartedly clashing / lucid at last
aghast at my part in this defective waltz

I alight from this doomed carousel / round and
round- our circular fights “(no) thanks for the ride!”
I yell from afar / and watch the lifeless horse
you clutch weep from its cold brass eyes
